
BRVM rises 0.73%, led by utilities' 6.11% jump
The BRVM Composite rose 0.73% to 501.3 points on Aug. 17, while the BRVM Composite Total Return closed at 200.78, lifted by utilities' 6.11% gain and energy's 3.04% rise. Telecommunications added 1.47% to 119.05 points, tracking Sonatel after its first-half profit reached CFA230 billion according to Sika Finance, following revenue of more than CFA1 trillion reported by Xalima. Trading remained concentrated in Sonatel, which accounted for more than half of the CFA4 billion traded on Aug. 4, according to Sika Finance, extending a weekly rebound led alongside Sicor as reported by Dabafinance. Financials were nearly flat at -0.02% despite Ecobank, whose first-half revenue rose 15% to $1.3 billion and pretax profit reached $423 million, according to leFaso.net, while Africa Intelligence reports the group is not favorable to entering the Ethiopian market.

Gains were led by discretionary consumption, up 2.78% to 201.4, and energy, up 1.43% to 163.79, while telecommunications fell 0.15% to 117.33 and industrials lost 0.42% to 221.94. Sonatel accounted for more than half of the 4 billion CFA francs traded on Aug. 4, according to Sika Finance, after what SenePlus called a historic half year with revenue above 1 trillion CFA francs, according to Xalima, and first-half 2026 profit of 230 billion CFA francs, according to Sika Finance. Ecobank separately posted first-half revenue up 15% to $1.3 billion and pre-tax profit of $423 million, according to leFaso.net, while net income reached 167 billion CFA francs but was held back by Nigerian risk costs, Sika Finance and Agence Ecofin reported.

The advance was driven by telecommunications, up 1.75% to 117.51 points, and financial services, up 1.02% to 240.32 points, in a market where Sonatel accounted for more than half of the 4 billion CFA francs traded on Aug. 4, according to Sika Finance. Sonatel reported first-half profit of 230 billion CFA francs and revenue above 1 trillion CFA francs, according to Sika Finance and Xalima, while Ecobank posted a 15% rise in revenue to $1.3 billion and pre-tax profit of $423 million, according to leFaso.net, even as net income of 167 billion CFA francs was constrained by risk costs, Sika Finance reported. By contrast, consumer discretionary fell 3.87% to 195.95 points and consumer staples slipped 0.58% to 287.01 points, while SITAB remained in focus after a net dividend of 1,707.2 CFA francs went ex-dividend on Aug. 12 and after leading the weekly rebound, according to Dabafinance.
