A 9.4% jump in Impala Platinum dominated trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange today, as platinum surged 4.6% to $1,663.1 an ounce and the rand strengthened 1.33% against the dollar, taking USD/ZAR to 16.4807. That mix pushed platinum group metal producers back to the centre of the tape in a session where the JSE All Share Index rose 1.30% to 111,872.7.
The move matters because it was not an isolated spike in a single counter. Impala’s rally came inside a broader rotation into miners, driven by simultaneous gains in platinum, palladium and gold. Palladium climbed 5.0% to $1,308.5, while gold added 3.4% to $4,173.3, as global commodity markets reacted to headlines about tighter supply risks and a possible “super-squeeze”, including warnings highlighted by HSBC.
