On Wednesday, 29 July 2026, the clearest signal on the JSE did not come from heavyweight tech names or the banks. It came from a domestic resources counter: Exxaro Resources surged 5.3% to 203.28 ZAR, the best performance on the day, as Brent crude jumped 7.7% to $90.56 a barrel. That gap between a sharp move in an energy-linked stock and a broader market gain of just 0.30% captured a South African market repricing global energy risk without delivering a broad-based rally.
The contrast was even sharper beneath the headline indices. The JSE All Share Index closed at 110,440.34, up 0.30%, while the Top 40 added only 0.22% to 102,328.05. Market breadth was negative at 23 gainers against 30 decliners out of 53 tracked stocks. In other words, JSE today was driven by a handful of energy, retail and defensive names, while banks, luxury and several miners acted as a drag.
