
BRVM ends flat as Ecobank and banks dominate the newsflow
The BRVM Composite rose 0.05% to 450.04 points and the BRVM Composite Total Return added 0.16% to 178.42, while the BRVM-30 slipped 0.03% to 211.11 points. Gains were led by energy at 1.67%, utilities at 1.63% and financials at 0.78%, while telecommunications fell 1.28% and industrials lost 0.87%. Newsflow was dominated by Ecobank, with a 22.5 billion CFA franc dividend approved, according to APS, a $450 million nature bond, according to Agence Ecofin, and 25 profitable subsidiaries versus 15 four years earlier, according to the same source. In the same sector, Ecobank Gabon posted 2025 net profit of 16 billion CFA francs, up 19% year on year, according to Sika Finance, while Coris Bank International Chad is negotiating a $10 million IFC guarantee line, Sika Finance reported.

The BRVM Composite rose 0.75% to 519.59 points on Aug. 20, while the BRVM Composite Total Return reached 208.11 points, also up 0.75%. Utilities led the market with a 3.94% gain to 293.79 points, ahead of energy at 174.87 points (+2.79%) and telecommunications at 128.72 points (+1.59%). The advance extended the move flagged by Sika Finance on Aug. 19, which said Sonatel generated CFA190 billion and pushed the market to a new high. On the corporate front, Sika Finance said SITAB posted stable first-half 2026 profit of CFA18 billion, while Financial Afrik reported ETI cut its board to 12 members and removed directors' term limits.

Energy fell 1.18% to 170.13, while financial services slipped 0.05% to 243.36. On the corporate side, Financial Afrik said Ecobank Transnational Incorporated cut its board to 12 members from 15 and removed directors' term limits, while Sika Finance reported SITAB posted stable first-half 2026 profit of 18 billion CFA francs.
