
BRVM rises 0.43% as utilities jump 3.25% and banks drive the narrative
The BRVM Composite rose 0.43% to 414.4 on May 18, while the BRVM-30 gained 0.63% to 195.78 and utilities jumped 3.25% to 162.13. Financials added 0.88% to 186.63 as Ecobank dominated the news flow, completing a $450 million green bond, announcing $3 billion for African trade and saying it wants to mobilise 500 million euros with BOAD and Proparco, according to Financial Afrik and Togo First. Sonatel added support after posting 113 billion CFA francs in first-quarter profit, Seneweb reported, while SOGB will pay more than 12 billion CFA francs in dividends in 2025, according to Africtelegraph. By contrast, discretionary consumption fell 2.16% to 180.61 and staples lost 1.86% to 259.53, even as ORAGROUP rebounded after several sessions of declines, according to Sika Finance.

Utilities led the market with a 3.94% gain to 293.79 points, ahead of energy at 174.87 points (+2.79%) and telecommunications at 128.72 points (+1.59%). The advance extended the move flagged by Sika Finance on Aug. 19, which said Sonatel generated CFA190 billion and pushed the market to a new high. On the corporate front, Sika Finance said SITAB posted stable first-half 2026 profit of CFA18 billion, while Financial Afrik reported ETI cut its board to 12 members and removed directors' term limits.

The move was led by utilities, up 6.08% to 282.66, and telecommunications, up 4.28% to 126.71, as Sika Finance reported Sonatel generated 190 billion CFA francs and pushed the market to a fresh high. Energy fell 1.18% to 170.13, while financial services slipped 0.05% to 243.36. On the corporate side, Financial Afrik said Ecobank Transnational Incorporated cut its board to 12 members from 15 and removed directors' term limits, while Sika Finance reported SITAB posted stable first-half 2026 profit of 18 billion CFA francs.
